Rainforest World Music Festival is a 3-day (from Jun 20, 2014 – Jun 22, 2014) internationally acclaimed world music festival staged against the backdrop of the rainforest in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia Borneo.
Held at the Sarawak Cultural Village with Mount Santubong on one side and the South China Sea on the other, the festival is more than just a place to hear music. During the day there are a wide variety of workshops that study sound, dance, and traditional arts from all corners of the globe. Attendees can immerse themselves in these workshops, learning new skills or brush up on ones that have gotten rusty. In the evening, the two main stages come alive with energetic musical performances by bands from as far away as Germany, Tanzania, and Canada.
The event has come quite a way from its inception in 1997. Supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board, it has grown steadily over the years to the point where more than 20,000 people attended last year’s event.
This year’s gathering promises to be the biggest and best yet, with new styles and genres from countries that have never been represented at previous events. At the workshops, attendees can learn about Malay dance, stringed instruments, Maori symbolism, and even the little-known zampogna, also known as Italian bagpipes.
The performances also promise to be world class. Confirmed acts include Blackbeard’s Tea Party from England, Ryuz from Japan, Karinthalakoottam from India, and Kalakan from Spain. Many others will appear on stage as well, plus local performers from around Malaysia.
Attendees will also have plenty of choices when it comes to shopping, eating, and fun. It will be hard to go hungry or thirsty with all the food and drink on offer, and vendors will offer all types of handmade crafts, art, jewelry, and even exhibitions by local educational institutions.
If you’re a fan of world music and performing arts, or simply want to experience a unique and memorable Malaysian vacation, the Rainforest World Music Festival is the perfect opportunity.
